Edinburgh Whisky Academy Visits McMillan Coppersmiths in Prestonpans
Our Founder Kirsty McKerrow recently had the pleasure of visiting McMillan Coppersmiths in Prestonpans for a tour led by Olga Gordon (Senior Marketing Coordinator) and Declan Rutherford (Coppersmith).
Olga - who completed EWA’s online Diploma in Single Malt Whisky in 2021 - together with Declan provided valuable insight into the coppersmithing process and the important role it plays in whisky production.

The tour offered a rare opportunity to see the process of crafting copper pot stills and other distillation equipment up close. Kirsty was impressed by the skill and precision involved in making these key pieces of equipment, which are essential to shaping the flavour of whisky.
Kirsty said, “It was a fascinating experience. The access I had to see the entire process, from copper metal sheets to finished stills, was invaluable. It really highlighted how much there still is to learn about this vital part of whisky production. It’s always a great reminder of the depth and complexity within the industry.”
We’re also excited to mention that the EWA team will be attending the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2025 next month, where McMillan’s parent company, Briggs of Burton, is contributing to an interactive tasting event titled "Still Game. Does green tech change your favourite dram?" Hosted by acclaimed drinks writer Kristiane Sherry, the event will explore how the heating and condensation methods used in whisky production – whether traditionally or with zero-carbon techniques – can impact the flavour of a dram. We’re looking forward to being part of this thought-provoking discussion and will be sure to report back on the findings.
A big thank you to Olga, Declan and the team at McMillan Coppersmiths for hosting us. We look forward to returning in the summer to film material for some exciting future projects (more details to come) and continuing to explore the many layers of the whisky world.
