Meet the Educator: Miguel Angel Hernandez Moreno

With a background in hospitality, Miguel Angel Hernandez Moreno created the More Than Wines academy to share his extensive experience, passion and dedication in wine, sake and spirits with candidates at both an intermediate and advanced level.
With locations across Spain, we’re delighted to welcome Miguel Angel Hernandez Moreno onboard as an Approved Course Provider. We caught up with him to learn more about what brought him to the role, what makes him tick and what his world of whisky looks like, quickfire style.

I am 100% focused on education. With bases all over Spain, More Than Wines specialises in technical training for wine, sake, spirits, tasting and service techniques. We also advise companies linked to the beverage and gastronomy industry.

My goal is to coordinate all the courses focusing on wines, spirits and sake. I love to teach. Ever since I started teaching in 2007, it has been my passion and in my role as Technical Director of More Than Wines, I get to do more of it.

Edinburgh Whisky Academy is fantastically run and we’re excited to work together for three key reasons. Firstly, the recognition by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is important to us. Secondly, the reputation of the other Educators is excellent. Finally, it’s exciting that the EWA team is growing at the same time as we are, so it feels as though there are strong parallels between us.

In every step of your education journey, there are wonderful things to discover and reinforce. The most important advice I’d give to someone wanting to learn more about whisky is to go step by step and try not to jump ahead.

Whisky wisdom: quick fire questions

First whisky you ever tasted?
Truly, the first was Cutty Sark mixed with Coca-Cola. The first that made me stop and think about what I was drinking were Cardhu and Chivas Regal 12. I tried both of them the very same day, under the guidance of my Dad.

Best whisky you have ever tasted?
Johnnie Walker Blue Label.

Favourite distillery to visit?
Any!

Favourite non-whisky drink?
Wine, sake, rum, brandy, gin…

Favourite whisky and food pairing?
Do cigars count as food?! If so, I’d say a fruity Glenmorangie with an Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2. I have the greatest memories with this pairing.

What person, dead or alive, would you most like to share a dram with?
Barack Obama.
