EWA Alumni: Zerlina Zhuang
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am Zerlina, and I am the managing director of Spirits Castle Pte Ltd. Our company imports and distributes spirits, including single malt Scotch whisky in Singapore.
How did you first discover whisky?
Work. I used to work in a ship carrier company and that's when I was introduced to whisky. I had known cognac and brandy for a long time before as my dad drinks them and inducted me into the world of spirits, but it was due to work that I discovered whisky. A couple of years after that, my husband (used to be colleague) introduced me to single malt Scotch whisky and I didn't look back after that.
Which part(s) of the Diploma in Single Malt Whisky did you find most enjoyable?
I am kind of geeky, so the production modules were really enjoyable. I have to say that the history of Scotch whisky is very comprehensive too.
What made the Diploma different from any previous whisky training you have completed?
It's comprehensive, easy to understand and very focused on single malt whisky alone. It's also in-depth enough for me to truly understand the production part better.
How has the Diploma helped progress your career/contributed to your professional life?
It has given me a better understanding which helps when I talk about whisky. The ability to answer geeky questions is also a plus.
Why would you recommend the Diploma in Single Malt Whisky?
Well, I think the answer is simple. The Diploma in Single Malt Whisky is really a study of all kinds of single malt whiskies, so it's not limited to Scotch. On top of that, the in-depth study also allows one to better understand the production of whisky.
