EWA Alumni: Toby Darling

Toby Darling currently works as a Market Support Representative for an alcohol wholesaler. With a professional background in distilleries and bartending, he has completed four EWA courses: the Online Diploma in Single Malt Whisky and Certificates in American Single Malt Whiskey, Irish Whiskey and Gin. He lives in Tennessee.

How did you first discover whisky?

I first discovered whisky by stealing a bottle of Dewar’s from my dad's collection when I was still a teenager. But I truly discovered it after working for a small distillery in Tennessee called Chattanooga Whiskey. I worked there for a number of years. Starting as a retail associate and working my way up to their Brand Ambassador. During my tenure there, I learned so many great things and really fell in love with the history science and people in this industry.

Which part(s) of the EWA courses did you find most enjoyable?

I love the interface of the online courses. It's very user-friendly and well-paced. I also thoroughly enjoy the amount of attention that is given to each section, as you can really see the care the educators/writers put into it. Especially in the history components.

What made the EWA courses different from any previous whisky training you have completed?

EWA is different as it builds a strong sense of community. Most other certification and education courses I have taken are always very dull. EWA stands out as a pioneer to establish continued growth and resources that outlast the courses themselves.

How has the EWA course(s) helped progress your career or contributed to your professional life?

As an industry professional working in the wholesaler sector, these courses helped separate me from the other sales reps out there. They also gave me the tools and confidence to hold and teach classes to my local community.

Why would you recommend the EWA course(s) to others?

To build your community and find a network of like-minded individuals. And to also foster your own educational growth and give you the right tools to succeed professionally.
