Ask the expert: Spring water whisky quality?

How important is "spring water" on the quality of whisky? And how does it affect the quality of whisky?

The water used during the production has no impact on the quality of whisky. The water used in mashing can have an effect on the fermentation, dependent upon hardness levels and ions present. There is some evidence to show softer water can result in heavier spirits, while harder water gives a cleaner and sweeter new make but out with this the effect of the water on the quality of the whisky is negligible.

The quality of the water you use to dilute your dram, may however play a role in how quality you view the whisky.
