Whisky words: No Age Statement (NAS)

No surprises to learn that No Age Statement (often referred to as NAS whisky) simply refers a whisky with no specified age.

All Scotch whisky, by law, must be at least three years and a day old. Indeed, it cannot be called whisky before this date under the 2009 Scotch Whisky Regulations.

The popularity of NAS whisky came about when ageing stocks were being depleted and distilleries could not keep up with demand. Nowadays, NAS whiskies are commonplace with many distillers arguing that the lack of an age statement allows more creativity and innovation during the production process.

Don’t be fooled into thinking the lack of an age statement indicates an inferior quality… some incredible whiskies are NAS! Give one a try.
